Message from the Dean and Vice President
Welcome to the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, where we have a global reputation for offering innovative education programs and high-impact research for more than 50 years.
When our first medical students began in 1969, McMaster University’s School of Medicine pioneered problem-based learning, a method that brings real-world medical issues into the classroom, empowering students to find solutions with the guidance of a tutor. Here we also coined and developed evidence-based medicine, which is used around the world today.
We remain unafraid to approach things differently, and our successful approach is reflected in our international reputation. McMaster is consistently ranked within the top 50 universities of the world for medicine and health by four international university ranking systems.
The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine encompasses our Undergraduate Medical Program, Postgraduate Medical Education Program, Midwifery Education Program and Physician Assistant Education Program. These are incredibly innovative, and world-leading in their own unique way.

Undergraduate Medical Education Learn More
The Undergraduate Medical Program uses a problem-based approach to learning that should apply throughout the physician’s career. Our three-year program was founded on the premise that medical students should learn medicine the way that physicians practice medicine.

The Postgraduate Medical Program provides an environment where learners can develop the skills to become expert physicians and leaders in healthcare. With multiple campuses connected to a range of teaching sites and resources, McMaster PGME offers learners the tools needed to train successfully and the ability to tailor their training to meet individual goals.
Physician Assistant Education Program Learn More
The Physician Assistant Education Program trains competent, innovative, and caring individuals in medicine to work in a collaborative model of practice to enhance healthcare delivery.
Midwifery Learn More
The Midwifery Education Program fosters partnerships between midwives, obstetricians, nurses and other health care providers through interprofessional education to provide midwifery as an important component of women’s health.
