MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN AND VICE PRESIDENT

Paul O'Byrne
Dr. Paul O’Byrne
Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences

Welcome to the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, where we have a global reputation for offering innovative education programs and high-impact research for more than 50 years.

When our first medical students began in 1969, McMaster University’s School of Medicine pioneered problem-based learning, a method that brings real-world medical issues into the classroom, empowering students to find solutions with the guidance of a tutor. Here we also coined and developed evidence-based medicine, which is used around the world today.

We remain unafraid to approach things differently, and our successful approach is reflected in our international reputation. McMaster is consistently ranked within the top 50 universities of the world for medicine and health by four international university ranking systems.

The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine encompasses our Undergraduate Medical Program, Postgraduate Medical Education Program, Midwifery Education Program and Physician Assistant Education Program. These are incredibly innovative, and world-leading in their own unique way.

Undergraduate Medical Program

The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine was founded on the premise that medical students should learn medicine the way that physicians practice medicine. Our Undergraduate Medical Program has an international reputation for its pioneering three-year program based on small group, self-directed, problem-based study and early introduction to the clinical experience.

The program uses a evidence-based approach to learning that should apply throughout the physician’s career. The components have been organized in sequential blocks with early exposure to patients and case management.

Postgraduate Medical Education

Postgraduate Medical Education at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine strives to empower medical learners by providing a safe, inclusive training environment rooted in values of lifelong learning, patient centeredness, and social responsibility.

Here, once again, we leverage our expertise in evidence-based teaching and practice, within a distributed education model, to equip the next generation of physicians with the knowledge and skills they need to serve our communities and advance health and health systems in Canada and globally.

Midwifery Education Program

Our Midwifery Education Program, begun in 1993 as the first in Canada, fosters partnerships between midwives, obstetricians, nurses and other health care providers through interprofessional education to provide midwifery as an important component of women’s healthcare. Midwives’ expertise in the care of normal pregnancy and childbirth arises from their understanding of childbearing as a social, cultural and biological process and their competent exercise of clinical skills.

Today, McMaster is the only place where domestic and international students can earn a Canadian MSc in midwifery.

Physician Assistant Education Program

In 2008, McMaster University became the first institution in Ontario to launch a Physician Assistant Education Program and Canada’s first civilian program at an undergraduate level. Our inaugural class pioneered a new role in health care provision in the province, practicing medicine under the supervision of a physician, to expand health care access for the people of Ontario.

The program is taught using inquiry and our problem-based learning approach, which enhances each student’s ability to think critically, solve problems, demonstrate initiative and independence in practice, and promote lifelong learning.

Please visit the individual programs below to learn about each of them, and to connect with them directly.
